RHK Volunteer Spotlight: Eric Curry

My name is Eric Curry. I grew up in Greenwood, IN, just south of Indianapolis. My wife, Tarah, and I moved to Rockford in 2023 when I accepted a job at First Free Rockford as their Director of Contemporary Worship.

We have a house full of fur babies—two dogs, four cats, and a hamster. I love music, skateboarding, and a good arts and crafts project.

While living in Indiana, Tarah and I enjoyed serving in outreach programs and ministries that allowed us to connect face-to-face with people going through really tough times—the lonely and forgotten. God put a desire in our hearts to help people know they are seen and have infinite value and worth to Him. So, when we first heard about Rock House Kids, we were interested in volunteering.

I have been volunteering at RHK for a little over a year, and it has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the week. During our first tour, we were in tears seeing how much the heart of Jesus was evident throughout the ministry.

Over the past several months, some other adult volunteers and I have been leading musical worship with the teens. It’s been such a cool experience to share the good news of Jesus through music while giving teens who are interested in music a chance to use their gifts to worship God!

What keeps me coming back every week is the connections. Whether it’s seeing a student have a light-bulb moment while learning about grace and forgiveness, hearing about the teens’ lives over dinner, or acting like a teen myself and playing basketball during free time, every connection helps build trust. It really is a marathon with some of them, but man, it is so worth it!

To anyone considering volunteering at RHK, I’d say, just come and see for yourself how big an impact Jesus is making in our community through this little ministry.
