This volunteer leads the Bible lesson for our 1st & 2nd graders on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings. He/She will expand on the Bible lesson for the day using provided curriculum, crafts, songs, and Bible verses. Teaching experience is not required. In addition to presenting the lesson, this Volunteer Mentor Leader builds trust-based relationships with them during unstructured play time and the evening meal.

Pebbles, our 1st & 2nd-grade program, runs from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteer mentors for Pebbles can choose either Mondays or Wednesdays to serve. Pebbles Mentors use unstructured free time at the beginning and end of the evening and during meal time to build trust-based relationships with the kids. After sharing a meal, the kids and their mentors go to chapel, where a Pebbles’ Lead Mentor introduces the Bible lesson for the night through multimedia and interactive activities. During chapel, volunteer mentors help to keep the children engaged. After chapel, Lead mentors direct the kids in crafts and other hands-on activities to help reinforce the Bible lesson and apply the lesson to the kids’ lives. Mentors help the kids with the activities and use teachable moments to reinforce the lesson. Teaching experience is not required.

Rocks, 3rd through 6th grade-grade program, runs from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteer Station leaders can choose either Mondays or Wednesdays to serve. Rocks Station leaders lead one of four stations: Bible Story station, Scripture Memory station, Craft station, or Game station using the provided curriculum. Children rotate in small groups every 15 minutes through the four stations. Teaching experience is not required. In addition to leading a station, this volunteer builds trust-based relationships with the 3rd through 6th-grade kids during unstructured play time and the evening meal.

Rocks, 3rd through 6th grade program, runs from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteer mentors can choose either Mondays or Wednesdays to serve. Rocks Mentors use unstructured free time at the beginning and end of the evening and during meal time to build trust-based relationships with the kids. After sharing a meal, the mentors lead a group of kids through four interactive activity stations: Bible Story station, Scripture Memory station, Craft station, and Game station. Stations are led by Station Leaders. Rocks Mentors encourage and support their kids through each station. The night also includes Chapel time with a brief multimedia review of the lesson and upbeat interactive worship songs. Teaching experience is not required.

The teen program runs from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteer Mentors can choose either Tuesdays or Thursdays to serve. Boulders Mentors use unstructured free time at the beginning and end of the evening and during meal time to build trust-based relationships with the teens. After sharing a meal, teens and their mentors go to chapel, where our Program Coordinator introduces the Bible lesson for the night through multimedia and interactive activities. After chapel is small group time. Volunteer mentors lead the small groups using the provided curriculum. Our mentors use discussion to help the teens apply the Bible lesson to their lives. Teens are divided into small groups based on age and gender. Teaching experience is not required.

We feed the kids a hot meal at the beginning of each evening program. Meals are often provided by an outside group, church, or individual. Our Meal Servers arrive by 5:15 p.m. and help set up the meal service counters if needed, then serve the kids as they go through the food lines and help clean up after. Meal servers can choose to serve weekly or monthly.

Van Drivers for Rock House Kids share our vision of providing a safe place, in this case, transportation, while being a positive and Godly role model for the children. Many kids who come to Rock House Kids live in areas prone to crime and other unsafe activities. Our drivers must be able and willing to pick up in inner-city areas and housing projects. We use large passenger vans to pick up and drop off kids each night. You will need a current driver’s license to be one of our van drivers. A firm, influential approach is ideal. Drivers arrive at RHK no later than 4:45 PM for pick-up and finish by 8:30 PM after drop-offs, Monday through Thursday. Drivers are needed all four nights. We will work with you to determine the night/nights that work best with your schedule. If possible, we ask our drivers to plan to come back to RHK between pick-ups and drop-offs just to hang out with the kids. This will help in building trust-based relationships with them.

A large part of our mission at Rock House Kids is providing a safe place for inner-city kids. Safety volunteers share in this mission by serving as crossing guards and eyes for any unsafe activity around the building as the kids arrive and leave. Safety volunteers are provided a walkie-talkie to communicate with the Rock House Kids staff. Safety Volunteers arrive at RHK at 4:55 and finish by 8:15 PM Monday through Thursday. Safety Volunteers are needed all four nights. We will work with you to determine the night/nights that work best with your schedule. If possible, we ask our Safety Volunteer to plan to hang out and share a meal with the kids. This will help in building trust-based relationships with them.
