From Our RHK Executive Director: Each Snowflake, Each Child - Wonderfully Made!

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;” Psalm 139:14a

Christmas at Rock House Kids is one of the most joyful times of the year. The building is filled with laughter, music, and excitement. One of our favorite traditions is making snowflakes out of coffee filters. We hang them throughout the building until it looks as though we’re standing inside a snow globe. You can’t help but smile as you walk through the rooms and see the beautiful winter scene surrounding you.

As you look closely at the snowflakes the kids have made, you notice how each one is unique. No two are the same - just like the snowflakes outside, and like the children who made them. Each boy and girl who walks through our doors is uniquely created by God, with their own personality, strengths, and story.

Some snowflakes are bright and bold—hard to miss, just like some of our kids. We have those who make their presence known the minute they walk in. They bring energy to the rooms, sometimes joyful and bubbly, at other times a little stormy, depending on the kind of day they’ve had.

Here at RHK, we ask the kids about their day using colors:

💚 Green Day – “It’s been a great day!”

💛 Yellow Day – “It could be better.”

❤️ Red Day – “It’s not been a good day.”

One evening, a teen came in clearly struggling. They were angry, yelling, pushing, and acting out. It wasn’t their best night, and we had to give them space to cool down. Later, when we asked what was going on, they opened about something difficult that had happened at school earlier that day.

A few weeks later, one of our quieter kids approached me and said softly, “Ms. Dee, I’m going through.” Those words told me everything. They didn’t want to talk just yet, but I reminded them that I was there whenever they were ready. With tears in their eyes, they nodded, and I knew they felt seen and cared for.

Two kids. Two rough days. Two completely different responses. Both were expressing what they were feeling in their own way—the way God made them.

When you stand back and look at all the snowflakes hanging together, they create something breathtaking—a perfect winter wonderland. That’s exactly how it is with our kids. Each one, in their own uniqueness, adds something special to the beauty of Rock House Kids.

When we truly know our kids, we notice when something’s off. We can celebrate with them when they’re excited and comfort them when life gets hard. Just as God created every snowflake to be one of a kind, He made every child special and deeply loved.

No matter the color of their day, we’re here to remind them that they are loved, valued, and never alone.

As we enter this Christmas season, we’re thankful for each unique child, each volunteer, and each donor who helps make Rock House Kids a place of love and hope. Together, we’re creating something beautiful—like a building full of snowflakes, each one shining in its own way.

From all of us at Rock House Kids,

Merry Christmas and blessings for a joyful New Year!
